BEHIND THE BUSINESS

Each week, we’ll introduce you to one of our Point Loma Association Business Members who is helping our community thrive. Get to know your neighbors, hear their stories, and discover the local talent behind the work.

Name: Brad Nelson
Business:
Point Loma Advisors

How long have you been in business?
8 years

What do you love most about what you do?
Financial planning and investment advice are, at their core, about optimization and efficiency. Helping people make the most of their financial potential is deeply satisfying. It’s a win/win business—success comes from helping clients succeed.

What’s one thing you’d like locals to know about your business or how you serve the community?
Point Loma is home. Being local means clients are also neighbors, and that makes their satisfaction a top priority.

What’s something interesting, fun, or unique about your business that might surprise us?
The name Point Loma Advisors makes perfect sense in the context of financial planning. Out of context, though, it can be a little mysterious. More than once, someone has asked what kind of advice we give—prompting me to joke that we start with the basics, like “look both ways before crossing the street.” And in a way, that’s not far off—financial planning is often about managing risk and avoiding hazards that can be easily prevented.

How has being part of the Point Loma Association helped you or your business?
Point Loma is full of friends and neighbors, and the PLA—especially the Mean Green Team—has been a great way to connect with them. In fact, community involvement started with the MGT, even before joining PLA as a business member. Financial planning is a long-game profession, and being part of the community helps people feel confident turning to you when they need your expertise.

Can you share a success story about connecting with another PLA Business Member or referring someone to them?
I’ve referred people to other PLA Business Members who are also playing the long game. Those referrals have sparked conversations and planted seeds that may grow over time, which is how relationships and businesses thrive.

What inspired you to start your business—or join it?
Still not sure what I want to be when I grow up! After working as an engineer in the military, government, and private sector—and investing personally since 1985—starting a financial planning firm felt like a natural next step. Living modestly has worked well for me, and now I’m helping others make the most of what they have to live their best lives.

What’s a lesson you’ve learned the hard way in business?
Building a business takes more than just setting up a website—some marketing is essential.

What’s a surprising skill or talent you have outside of work?
Keeping my classic 1941 and 1962 Ford cars running smoothly.

What’s your go-to way to recharge after a long day?
A good session at the gym.

If your business had a theme song, what would it be?
While my business doesn’t have a theme song, I do have a personal one: Ventura Highway by America. I spent most of my life on the East Coast before moving to California in 2020, but that song’s easygoing 1970s California vibe has been a favorite for decades.

Do you have a favorite quote or motto that inspires you at work?
“Live for today but plan for tomorrow.”

When did you decide to relocate to California?
My first visit to San Diego was in the mid-1990s, serving as a Naval Reservist. I spent three weeks working on a submarine in the floating dry dock at Naval Base Point Loma and stayed in a modest motel on Rosecrans Street. The experience stuck with me—and the idea of moving here has been on my mind ever since.
