BEHIND THE BUSINESS
Each week, we’ll introduce you to one of our Point Loma Association Business Members who is helping our community thrive. Get to know your neighbors, hear their stories, and discover the local talent behind the work.
Name: Jessica Romero, MSN, APRN, AGNP-BC, CNS
Business: Point Loma Cosmetics
What do all of those important-sounding acronyms after your name mean? It looks like a long Wi-Fi password. In California, you need specific licenses and advanced training to practice aesthetics at the level I do. Here’s what mine mean:
MSN – Master of Science in Nursing
APRN – Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (more advanced training than an RN, but still a licensed nurse)
AGNP-BC – Board-Certified Adult-Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. I can diagnose, prescribe, and treat patients from puberty through end of life. (Injectables like Botox and fillers still require a prescription, which I can provide.)
CNS – Clinical Nurse Specialist. This reflects additional state-licensed training in expert clinical practice, education, research, and outcomes.
In short: I’ve put in a lot of years of education so I can safely combine science, skill, and aesthetics in my practice.
How long have you been in business?
We opened our doors in 2017 — which means we’re now celebrating 8 years of beauty, science, and skin glow-ups!
What’s a piece of advice you tell your clients or customers that will save them time, money, or both?
Sunscreen, sunscreen, and more sunscreen. I'd like to say it one more time for those in the back to hear it: sunscreen! We are so fortunate to live in a beautiful sunny climate by the beach, which makes a commitment to sunscreen all the more important. Sunscreen protects against aging, prevents sun damage, and most importantly, helps guard against skin cancer. Trust me, it’s the one habit that makes all the difference.
What do you love most about what you do?
Hands down, I love the people! I love helping patients feel their best, and I particularly love meeting the people who live right here in Point Loma. This community is full of vibrant energy and amazing stories, and I am honored to be a part of that every day.
Tell us about a moment when you knew you chose the right career.
As a young girl, I was always drawn to beauty and aesthetics but wasn’t sure how to turn that interest into something more. About ten years ago, I had my first Botox treatment, and I immediately recognized how powerful and effective it could be. That experience sparked a deeper curiosity in me—I wanted to understand the science behind it, learn how to perform treatments safely, and eventually offer them to others. It was a turning point that confirmed I had found a path that combined both my passion and purpose. That’s when I knew I had chosen the right career.
What’s a memorable experience you’ve had with a customer or client?
Oh, there are so many special ones! I’ve had the privilege of being part of my clients’ biggest life moments from engagements and weddings to job promotions and other major milestones. Being trusted to help them feel their best during such meaningful times is something I don’t take lightly.
Over time, many of us have truly gotten to know each other and some even feel like friends. We’ve laughed together, cried together, and shared pieces of our lives beyond just skincare or aesthetics.
But the most rewarding part, by far, is watching their confidence grow. Seeing someone light up not just because of how they look, but because they finally feel like themselves. That never gets old.
What’s a lesson you’ve learned the hard way in business?
If I HAD to choose just one lesson it would be delegation. You really can’t (and shouldn’t) do it all. Learning to focus on your strengths and trusting others to handle the rest is key to growth — and your sanity!
Which part of your job will AI never be able to do?
Injecting fillers and neurotoxins with precision, care, and artistry — that’s all human, baby.
What makes your work environment somewhere you enjoy being?
It’s close to home which gives it a local vibe that I love.
What’s your favorite object or item in your workspace — and what’s the story behind it?
My favorite “object” in my workspace isn’t really an object — it’s the space itself. Point Loma Cosmetics is something I built from the ground up, and every corner of it reflects a dream I never thought I’d be brave enough to chase. When I opened it, I was a single parent who had just finished my master’s degree. I didn’t come from a business background, and starting something on my own felt intimidating — even impossible at times. But I poured my heart into creating a space where people could feel confident, cared for, and beautiful. So when I walk into my office, I’m reminded not just of how far I’ve come, but of what’s possible. I want other women to know they’re capable of building something incredible too — and I’ll be right there rooting for them.
What do you have in your workspace that sparks creativity?
My creative spark actually comes from outside the office — attending conferences, learning from fellow injectors, and seeing new ideas in action always inspires me.
What’s your go-to music while you work?
I don’t listen to music while I work — I’m 100% focused on each patient and their unique goals.
What’s your favorite local spot for a client lunch?
Solare, Buona Forchetta, and The Fish Shop — you can’t go wrong with any of them!
What other local clubs or associations do you belong to besides the PLA?
I am proud to serve as an Epilepsy Ambassador for the Epilepsy Foundation — it’s a cause that’s deeply personal and incredibly close to my heart.
Where’s your go-to spot in Point Loma when you need to think, recharge, or celebrate?
Solare is my forever favorite. But a walk through my beautiful Loma Portal neighborhood or a walk around Sunset Cliffs is my reset button.
