BEHIND THE BUSINESS
Each week, we’ll introduce you to one of our Point Loma Association Business Members who is helping our community thrive. Get to know your neighbors, hear their stories, and discover the local talent behind the work.
Name: Alex Gonzalez
Business: Sea Harbor Hotel
How long have you been in business?
The property itself has been around since the 1960s. When I started back in 2019, it was still operating as a Vagabond Inn. After some major renovations, it became what it is today, Sea Harbor Hotel.
What’s something interesting, fun, or unique about you or your business that might surprise us?
Fun fact, we have an A-list “Happy Hour” sign that always catches people’s attention. Guests will walk in and ask, “Where’s the bar?”; but our “Happy Hour” actually means 50% off canned drinks we sell at the front desk. It makes everyone laugh once they realize it’s not a full bar setup!
What do you love most about what you do?
I really love customer service and helping people with their needs. Every trip is different, some guests are here for work, others for fishing trips, family time, or just to relax. Being part of those moments and helping make their stay special is what makes me love this job. When guests leave happy and tell us they’ll be back, that’s the best feeling.
Tell us about a moment when you knew you chose the right career.
Pretty simple; I realized I was happy going to work. It never feels like an obligation to wake up and head in for the day. Instead, it’s more like, “Alright, let’s see what challenges or good experiences are waiting today.” That’s when I knew I was in the right place.
What’s your favorite local spot for a client lunch?
There are so many good ones around here; Mitch’s Seafood, Pomodoro, La Perla, Ketch, Miguel’s, Old Venice, and Pizza Nova are all great. But if I must pick one, my go-to would be Jimmy’s Famous Tavern.
What’s a lesson you’ve learned the hard way in business?
Be fair but stay consistent.
There’s a reason why rules and procedures exist, they come from past lessons and experiences. It’s not always easy, but sticking to them really matters. When you start letting things slide too much, whether it’s with clients or employees, problems pile up. Rules exist for a reason, and when you stick to them, you avoid bigger problems later. It’s about finding the balance between being understanding and keeping things in order.
What’s your go-to music while you work?
Funny thing, I’ve always liked music of all kinds, but lately I’ve become more of a podcast guy. I usually listen to horror stories or business and economy podcasts. And of course, sports radio is always on in the background.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto that inspires you?
like the simple idea that if you take care of people, the rest follows in place; and that includes your team, your clients, and your community.
What other local clubs or associations do you belong to besides the PLA?
We are members of San Diego Tourism Authority and well this is not me personally, but my son plays baseball in Point Loma Little League.
Anything else you’d like readers to know?
I was raised in Los Angeles, and my family’s originally from there too. Now we all proudly call Point Loma home; and yes, we’re big Padres fans!
