BEHIND THE BUSINESS
Each week, we’ll introduce you to one of our Point Loma Association Business Members who is helping our community thrive. Get to know your neighbors, hear their stories, and discover the local talent behind the work.
Name: Lisa Johnson
Business: Arts District Liberty Station
How long have you been in business?
This year begins the celebration of our 25th anniversary
What do you love most about what you do?
Every day is different and, even though I have been doing this almost 11 years, I learn something new each day, which I love.
What’s a piece of advice you tell to your clients or customers that will save them time, money, or both?
Shop local; shop small businesses.
What’s a fun or interesting skill or talent you have outside of work?
I love to cook and bake and share what I make with others. I also like to write and someday I hope to finish my novel. Something my friends know about me is that I am a ‘closet mixologist.’ I enjoy creating unique cocktails for friends when they come over.
What’s a lesson you’ve learned the hard way in business?
Never, ever, ever burn a bridge. You just never know when you will encounter someone for a second time in your life. It happens all the time. Treat everyone with kindness and respect.
What do you have in your workspace that sparks creativity?
Original artwork loaned by our artists. They change it out in our office every four months or so, which keeps our environment creative and dynamic.
What’s your favorite local spot for a client lunch?
Solare Ristorante
Which part of your job will AI never be able to do?
We hand select tenants, emerging artists, and installation artists for our arts district and AI will never be able to replace humans, in person, doing that work.
What makes your work environment somewhere you enjoy being?
The wonderful people on my team I am honored to work with.
What’s your favorite object or item in your workspace — and what’s the story behind it?
When people in our office travel, we often bring back fun things for our team members. I am a big Frida Kahlo fan and one of my team members brought me a small post card with Frida on it and she didn’t know, at the time, that I love Frida Kahlo.
What other local clubs or associations do you belong to besides the PLA?
Point Loma Assembly
Where’s your go-to spot in Point Loma when you need to think, recharge, or celebrate?
Carruth Cellars Urban Winery
What’s something interesting, fun, or unique about you or your business that might surprise us?
I like to have walking meetings and encourage others on my team to do that too.
What did you want to be when you grew up — and if it’s not what you do now, why did you give up on that?
I wanted to be a social worker, and I was for 12 years. I worked for San Diego County’s Child Welfare Services and protecting and celebrating children remains a passion of mine. I still volunteer and donate to organizations who help children and families.
Do you have a favorite quote or motto that inspires you?
“Being Responsible Sometimes Means Pissing People Off,” by Colin Powell:
“Good leadership involves responsibility to the welfare of the group, which means some people will get angry at your actions and decisions. It’s inevitable, if you’re honorable. Trying to get everyone to like you is a sign of mediocrity: you’ll avoid the tough decisions, you’ll avoid confronting people who need to be confronted, and you’ll avoid offering differential rewards based on differential performance because some people might get upset. Ironically, by procrastinating on the difficult choices, by trying not to get anyone mad, and by treating everyone equally “nicely” regardless of their contributions, you’ll simply ensure that the only people you’ll wind up angering are the most creative and productive people in the organization.”
What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not working?
I love to walk and run outdoors, and I love long walks with friends or family members. I love enjoying our beautiful community.
